Cemeteries in the City of Los Angeles

the house by the cemetery

At best, The House by the Cemetery is a mixed bag, but it brings enough interesting material to the table to make it worth the effort. Taking influences from The Shining, The Amityville Horror, and the stories of H.P. The cinematography provided once again by Sergio Salvati clearly provides credibility to the work. While some of the imagery proves less impactful than that of The Beyond, the technical delivery is actually quite good. Salvati used great shot framing technics to place his subjects strategically in 1/3s. He then uses zoom and focus to draw the various subjects in and out of depth and view.

Throats are torn out, all to the wonderful sound of Walter Rizatti’s haunting score. Throughout the 1980s and beyond, the film had a number of home video releases from different labels in different versions. Many of the criticisms laid against it spawned from its reels sometimes being shown out of order, making it more of a joke than intended. Also hampering it was the young Giovanni Frezza, whose girlish voice in the English dub, as well as his blonde moppet-like appearance, was excruciating to many.

House by the Cemetery, The (4K UHD Review)

Grabbing a knife from the slab, Norman stabs Freudstein, causing flesh and maggots to ooze out of the latter's old lab coat. Lucy and Bob climb a ladder leading to the underside of the cracked tombstone. Freudstein grabs Lucy and drags her down the stairs. Her head bangs on each step on the way down, killing her. As Freudstein advances up the ladder, Bob strains to escape. As Freudstein grabs Bob's leg, he is pulled upwards by Mae.

The audio is included in English Dolby Atmos, English 5.1 and 1.0 DTS-HD, and Italian 1.0 DTS-HD. Subtitle options include English SDH, French, Spanish, and English for the Italian Audio. The new Dolby Atmos track does a much better job at spacing out the film’s original mono soundtrack than the 5.1 track does, though a slight volume adjustment might need to be made depending on one’s setup.

The House By The Cemetery strays farther from the plot devices of the other films and any connection to the trilogy seems to have been an after-thought. It’s definitely not “great” from a directorial pov but it’s a very fun watch. The story is a little convoluted and all over the place but the practical effects/gore were done super well and you get your moneys worth. Bob is the WORST and I was hoping he wouldn’t make it to the end. That said, this is pretty average, and has its moments of humor sprinkled throughout.

It also features minor hiss and not as much push for the score. It’s a more natural option as the dialogue, also dubbed, is more authentic to what was actually shot, though your mileage may vary. Bob ultimately becomes an orphan at the hands of Dr. Freudstein. He is pulled to safety by Mae just inches from suffering the same fate.

A rotting hand of Dr. Freudstein appears and restrains Bob against the door as the hatchet chops through it. The axe eventually breaks through the door and severs the ghoul's hand. Lucy finds Ann cleaning a bloodstain on the kitchen floor the next morning.

Side views of Freudstein clearly show the break between the latex appliance and the real human tissue of the actors ear. To be clear, none of this really affects our review of the film, but is this really a trilogy? Norman and Lucy get into the cellar, which contains several mutilated bodies (including Ann, Mrs. Gittleson, and the couple who died earlier), surgical equipment, and a slab. The 150-year-old Freudstein lives by using his victims' parts to regenerate blood cells. Norman attacks the ghoul, who twists the hatchet away.

The House by the Cemetery is much tamer to Fulci’s previous films by comparison. By this time, his name had become ubiquitous with Italian horror, specifically for his extreme uses of violence and gore (later on receiving accusations of misogyny for The New York Ripper). Though the film contains a severe throat-cutting sequence, as well as an extended scene of a repeated stabbing via a fireplace poker, it’s not quite as grisly as Fulci’s previous work. However, it does offer an effective villain, whose child-like cries are enough to send shivers up anyone’s spine. After doing some research, we are going call it tenuous, but plausible. It all anchors to what seems to have been an unnecessary sub-plot involving Bob and a little girl name Mae.
